Welcome to the Tuwanek Community Website

Welcome to The Community of Tuwanek and Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast of BC The Tuwanek community on the Sunshine Coast is located on the eastern side of Sechelt Inlet at the foot of Mount Richardson. The name is derived from one of the original four "septs" (division of the Sechelt Nation) located around Narrows Arm. The area still retains a cottage 'feeling', with many of the homes, cottages and B&B's overlooking Sechelt Inlet.

Tuwanek is the eastern gateway to the Tetrahedron Plateau and Provincial Park. The park is great for summer hiking and walking as well as snow shoeing, cross country skiing and winter activities. Visit the Tetrahedron page under the activity section for more information and maps. In the summer the area is know for it's cute cozy cottages that meander along the shorelines. It is a favorite getaway for cottage owners and tourists alike who long for the peaceful quiet relaxation. The envy of many, about 50% of the area is now home to full time residents which are able to enjoy the beauty of the area year round. Located at the end of the road, this residential cottage community is the starting point for some of the most beautiful Sea Kayaking in the world. The Sechelt Inlet Marine Parks are just a short ten minute paddle and there are 9 locations on the Sechelt Inlet with numerous areas to explore. Be sure to pack out any garbage as these marine parks are boat access only and many are only serviced a few times per year. Most have fresh water drinking creeks but in the summer months when flows are low you should either pack water in with you, or make sure you have a good filtration system. Each of the marine parks has outhouse facilities and many have food hangers. Parking is limited but you can park on the side of the access road to Lambs Bay. Please be respectful of the local neighbors and the tranquility of the area.

If you like to dive, this area is rated in 101 dives as one of the best on the West Coast. Shore diving is accessible from the small spit at the end of the road. There are two nice shore dives from the local spit / beach which are great for beginners and experts alike. The sandy bottom from the main spit to the Lamb Islet is about 40 feet in depth and great spot for newer divers to practice their skills. Enjoy the view some of the fantastic marine life that dots the inlet. Come visit the seals and Wolf Eels and you might even spot the local resident octopus.

Sechelt is a small village of approximately 8000 people sitting on a sandbar. The narrow Sechelt isthmus is less than 4 blocks wide separating Sechelt Inlet from the Strait of Georgia and the open ocean. The word "Sechelt" means land between two waters. Sechelt's central location on the southern peninsula of the Sunshine Coast makes it a natural hub for cottage industry, small businesses, culture and tourism. Sechelt is home to many good restaurants. Be sure to check our links section as we have added the current restaurant menus for many of the local restaurants. Also there is a list of handy local phone numbers and websites for other businesses.
